‘Lore Stessel’s encounters with the dancer(s) and their environment is crucial to these images: she invites them to dance freely in front of her (lens) in a context/place of their choice; sometimes indoors, mostly outdoors, but always in a place that, through them, Lore Stessel comes to discover herself.’*

‘…Essentially, Stessel asks herself what characterizes humankind, both in a universal sense and from an individual perspective, as a subject and as an object. (…) In her view the key to this riddle lies in the movement itself, in particular in the small gestures, the subtle multiplicity of feelings each movement embodies. (…) It’s in the curve of a toe, a touch that seems slightly more intense than the others, a pose that lingers long enough to form a prelude to the next….’**

‘Throughout these meetings between photographer and dancer, mutual “trust” between both partners is essential. The entire creative process takes place within the compelling suspense of time, always accompanied by a deeply human awareness of its fleetingness and value.’*

‘Dancing is a language,’ she says, but expressing it through her own images, she uses this language to write a new story. (…) A story that has been stripped of all frills, stripped of context. A possibility of essence.’*
